Take Pictures of Your Valuables Before You Need Them

If you experienced a major loss, such as a fire, storm, or other unexpected event, could you remember everything inside your home?

Most homeowners would be surprised by how difficult it is to list every item they own, from furniture and electronics to clothing, appliances, jewelry, and personal belongings. Even if you could remember most items, you may not know their current value or have documentation needed during the claims process.

That’s why creating a home inventory before a loss happens can make a significant difference.

Why a Home Inventory Matters

Your homeowners insurance may include coverage for your personal belongings, but after a major loss, remembering every item you own can be overwhelming. A detailed inventory can help provide documentation of your belongings and make the claims process easier.

Start by documenting:

  • A description of each item

  • Purchase dates, if available

  • Receipts or proof of purchase

  • Serial numbers for electronics and appliances

  • Estimated values of higher-value items

Be sure to store this information somewhere safe outside of your home, such as a secure digital storage location or cloud account. Keeping your inventory only on a computer or device inside your home may not help if those items are damaged or destroyed.

Take Photos & Videos of Your Home

Photos and videos are one of the easiest ways to document your belongings. Walk through your home room by room and capture:

  • Furniture and décor

  • Electronics

  • Appliances

  • Closets and clothing

  • Jewelry and collectibles

  • Outdoor items such as grills, equipment, and furniture

Taking a video walkthrough of your home can provide a helpful overview of your belongings and the condition of your property.

Don’t Forget Your Valuables

Certain items may have special coverage limits under a standard homeowners policy. These can include items such as:

  • Jewelry

  • Collectibles

  • Artwork

  • Antiques

  • Sports equipment

  • Electronics

If you own valuable collections or higher-priced items, it’s important to understand how your policy covers them. Additional coverage may be available depending on the item and its value.

Update Your Inventory Regularly

Your home and belongings change over time. New furniture, upgraded electronics, home improvements, and valuable purchases can all impact your insurance needs.

Consider reviewing your inventory at least once a year or after major purchases to make sure your records stay current.

Be Prepared Before a Loss Happens

A major loss can be stressful enough without trying to remember everything you own. Taking a few minutes now to document your belongings can help make the process smoother if you ever need to file a claim.
